Andrew Surmani
Andrew Surmani Andrew Surmani is CEO of Caleb Chapman’s Soundhouse, a contemporary music performance studio in Utah that will be franchised all over the world. He is also Associate Professor of Music Industry Studies and serves as the Academic Lead of the Master of Arts in Music Industry Administration degree program at California State University, Northridge. Prior to joining the Soundhouse and the CSUN faculty, Andrew worked for more than 29 years for Alfred Music, his last role as Chief Marketing Officer overseeing global sales, marketing, and product development. While at Alfred Music he helped launch some of the company’s most successful product lines. A co-author of the best-selling series, Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory and the Copyright Handbook for Music Educators and Directors, Andrew has also published articles in educational and music industry journals, and has conducted workshops on music education and industry topics throughout the world. Andrew played trumpet in the California All-State Honor Band, the McDonald’s All-American High School Marching Band and Jazz Band, and the Walt Disney World All-American College Jazz Band. Andrew attended California State University, Northridge where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance. While at Northridge he played with the CSUN Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz “A” Band. Andrew also works as a freelance musician, and has performed in the Montreux (Switzerland), Istanbul (Turkey), Juan-les-Pins (France), Jazz à Vienne (France), Umbria (Italy), Lake Biwa (Japan), San Sebastian (Spain), and Wigan (England) international jazz festivals. He has performed in the concert halls of Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Additionally, he led a band and played lead trumpet in two shows at Walt Disney World, and also managed high school groups on tour to Hawaii and Japan for a music production company. After playing trumpet at Walt Disney World, Andrew returned to southern California to complete his MBA degree and began working for Alfred Music. Andrew was a Founding Board Member and is a Past President of the Jazz Education Network (JEN). In addition, he served on the Music Technology Advisory Board at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and the Technology through Music Education (TI:ME) Advisory Board.
Morton Manus
About Morton Manus Morty Manus is president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. When Morty joined the company, he had recently received a business degree from City College of New York. As a clarinetist and pianist, he saw the need for quality music education publications. Drawing upon his musical experiences, Morty oversaw the development of instructional publications for accordion, guitar, piano, and drums; performance music for band, orchestra, chorus, and music theory. Morty is the author and editor of numerous Alfred titles, including Alfred’s Basic Guitar Course, Alfred’s Basic Piano Library, Alfred’s Adult Piano Course, and Essentials of Music Theory. In 2008, he received an honorary doctorate degree in music from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago for “having made a significant contribution to the music education profession as evidenced by his outstanding creative achievements, scholarship and leadership.” Morty met his wife Iris when she was working for Alfred on Saturdays. Iris has worked on a full-time basis for Alfred since the late 1960s, and maintains the position of executive producer. In New York City’s Tin Pan Alley in 1922, Sam Manus, a violinist and importer of mood music for silent films, started a music publishing company and named it Manus Music. The company published primarily popular sheet music. In 1930, Sam acquired the music publisher, Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase. Sam decided to combine the names and shortened it to Alfred Music, which the company is still known as today. Sam’s son, Morty (né Morton Manus; 1926–2016), clarinetist and pianist, began working for Alfred Music in the late 1940s and met his wife Iris at the company when the bookkeeper, Rose Kopelman, brought her daughter to work one day. Inspired by the need for quality music educational products.[1] Morty, a clarinetist and pianist, oversaw the development of an instructional series for accordion, followed by books for guitar, piano, and recorder. Alfred Music was now more than just a sheet music publisher; the company was taking its first steps to becoming the leader in music education. In 1975, the firm moved to larger offices in Los Angeles. In 1980, with growing sales, the company went international.
