This is a review of the 4th Edition published in May 2019, covering WordPress 5.0 (832 pages, eBook)
This book covers everything related to creating, editing and publishing a WordPress website quite thoroughly. I would have liked to see more about creating and editing Themes, but to be fair I think this book does cover that topic sufficiently well overall.
There is a chapter explaining how to use the WordPress Dashboard GUI (about 40 pages covering the WordPress 5.0 front end) which is aimed at complete beginners, but the majority of the book is NOT aimed at beginners, so in my opinion the book is somewhat misnamed as a “for dummies” title.
I spent a lot of time researching WordPress books and reading reviews of them etc., and I think that I made the best choice when I bought this book. Overall I would recommend it to anyone who is new to WordPress.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Things that make you go “Hmmmmm…”

I’ve just started reading this so I’ll probably update this later. However, the very 1st paragraph of chapter 2 states: “ Open-source software is a movement that started in the software industry in the 1980s. Its origins are up for debate, but most people believe that the concept came about in 1983, when a company called Netscape released its Navigator web browser source code to the public, making it freely available to anyone who wanted to dig through it, modify it, or redistribute it.”
This would be a pretty miraculous occurrence since the World Wide Web didn’t exist until 1991 and Netscape was founded in 1994. Guess that goes to show how much you can trust what “most people believe”. I hope the rest of the book is more accurate.

Kind of hard to navigate, and often, what I want to know has a reference to another chapter. That having been said, there’s a huge amount of info there. I built a website many years ago in HTML. A family member upgraded it to WordPress several years ago, but I was not happy with it. This time, I’m doing it over my self, with some important help from this book and the host’s tech support. It’s still in progress, but it’s live and better. Glad to have this book!

This book is from a developer of experience. She generously shares a bunch of her tricks, secrets and advice. It is surely good for beginners but it goes beyond and this is a very good new! First I decided to buy the Kindle version but soon I realised it was better for me to have the hardcover (paperback) version because this is now a real “reference book” that I want to consult often. One of the best books I read about WordPress. After a book like this one, the second step is to take a specialised course in order to be an advanced developer (… if this is your goal!).
